Frequently Asked Questions

We understand you may have concerns. Here are answers to the most common questions from seniors considering strength training.

Am I too old to start strength training?
You're never too old to start! We work with adults in their 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond. Our oldest member started at 87. Age is not a barrierβ€”it's precisely why you need strength training to maintain independence and quality of life.
Is strength training safe for seniors?
When done properly with professional supervision, strength training is not only safe but essential for healthy aging. Our coaches are specially trained to work with older adults and will ensure you start at an appropriate level and progress safely.
Do I need any prior exercise experience?
No experience necessary! Many of our members had never lifted weights before joining. We start everyone from the beginning with proper form instruction and gradually build up strength and confidence.
What if I have arthritis, osteoporosis, or other health conditions?
Strength training can actually help manage these conditions when done correctly. We work with your doctor's recommendations and modify exercises as needed. Many members see improvement in joint pain and bone density after consistent training.
How often do I need to train?
We typically recommend 2-3 sessions per week for optimal results. This allows for proper recovery while maintaining consistent progress. Our coaches will design a schedule that fits your lifestyle and recovery needs.
What if my doctor or family is worried?
We encourage you to discuss our program with your doctor. Many physicians refer their patients to us because they understand the importance of strength training for healthy aging. We're happy to speak with your healthcare provider about how our program can support your health goals.
How is Starting Strength different from other gyms or personal training?
Strength training is different from traditional exercise because it's a goal-oriented process. The goal is strength because getting stronger has the biggest impact on all of the outcomes that matter most to people: how you feel, how you look, and how you perform day to day.
Will I have the same coach every time?
Yes. We prioritize the relationship between Members and Coaches, ensuring a deep understanding is built over time so we can best help you achieve your goals inside and outside of the gym.
What happens during my free consultation?
Your Coach will teach you the primary barbell lifts and establish your baseline weights so you're ready to join your private group training session as soon as 48 hours later.
How much does it cost to join?
Your first session is free. Next up is an Intro session to learn the remaining lifts: $185. Then you'll be training 3 days/week at less than $40 per session. We bill month to month and your first month is refundable if you are not happy with your progress. Just email us to request a refund if your expectations weren't exceeded, no hassle.
